via livemint : Facebook is trying to help people in need of blood by connecting them directly to blood donors. Users who are willing to help can sign up to be blood donors on Facebook and if there is a blood request close to their location they will get a notification on their phone. The feature is currently available only on the Facebook app.

To sign up to be a donor, open your Facebook app and scroll down the news feed until you come across a post with a pink and red coloured heart. Tap on the ‘Start Helping Now’ button at the bottom of the post.

Tap on the ‘Join Now’ button on the next page. This will open the third and final page where you have to mention your blood group. If you don’t know your blood group, you can select the ‘I don’t know’ option. User also has to mention if they have donated blood in the past.

Here you can see the names of your friends who have also signed up to donate blood.

The next time an individual user or an organization posts a blood donation request, Facebook will instantly send out notifications to all signed blood donors in the vicinity. Donors can go through the request in the News feed and if their blood group matches the requirement they can contact the concerned people directly via a phone call, Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp.

Often criticised for its negative effects, social media has come forward for humanitarian causes on many occasions. Google provides SOS alerts to users to warn them about a natural or human-caused crisis in their location. Facebook’s Safety Check allows users to let their loved ones know they are safe during a crisis. Google recently added the option to take a PHQ-9 test on Google search to create awareness about chronic depression.
