Everyone’s into boutique beers right now. And everyone’s into gut health right now. So it was only a matter of time before someone crafted a beer designed to boost your gut health.
Researchers from the National University of Singapore have created a beer infused with probiotics — aka beneficial bacteria which take up home alongside the billions of other microscopic good guys living in your large intestine.
The invention is the work of fourth-year food science student Chan Mei Zhi Alcine, who noted there are no beers in the market that contain probiotics despite their proven health benefits.
“Developing sufficient counts of live probiotics in beer is a challenging feat as beers contain hop acids that prevent the growth and survival of probiotics,” she said in a statement.
It took her about nine months to perfect the recipe for the beer, which takes about a month to brew and has an alcohol content of about 3.5 percent.
“For this beer, we used a lactic acid bacterium as a probiotic micro-organism,” Chan explained. “It will utilise sugars present in the wort to produce sour-tasting lactic acid, resulting in a beer with sharp and tart flavours.”
Her supervisor Associate Professor Liu Shao Quan believes beer aficionados will welcome the probiotic bevvie.
“They can now enjoy their beers and be healthy,” he said.
A caveat: Probiotic beer sounds great in theory but is unlikely to be a miracle elixir, owing to the fact that alcohol is not so great for your gut bacteria, and experts generally recommend cutting back on it as a first step to giving your insides a makeover.
Rather than turning to probiotic beer, you’re best off eating more fermented foods to boost your gut health — click here for some of the best examples.
